This painting of Edgar Allan Poe by Joseph Solman was modeled after the Whitman or Hartshorn Daguerreotype that was taken in Providence on November 13, 1848. The library was given a reproduction of the daguerreotype by Brown University which is displayed next to the portrait by Solman.

In 1912, Solman immigrated to the US from Russia as a young child. He studied art at the National Academy of Design in New York, and was a co-founder with Mark Rothko of the abstract expressionist group known as The Ten. The portrait of Poe was donated by the artist’s daughter, Ronni Solman, in 2016.
