In 1908, Edmond T. Quinn, a sculptor and painter who studied under Thomas Eakins, was hired by the Bronx Society of Arts and Sciences to sculpt a bust of the author Edgar Allan Poe in commemoration of the 100th anniversary of his birth. The resulting plaster bust was cast in bronze and unveiled in 1909 at the Poe cottage in Poe Park.

In 2009, the Poe Museum in Virginia produced ten plaster copies of Quinn’s original plaster bust, which is part of their collection. Private collector Levi Leland acquired one of these copies directly from the museum in 2012. In 2019, the Athenæum commissioned this plaster copy of Leland’s bust from Skylight Studios in Woburn, Massachusetts.
